about the play
In this powerful historical play, Henrietta Vinton Davis—the greatest African American classical actress of the 19th century—wrestles with the ghost of Robert Poston, a deceased UNIA colleague, as she prepares to introduce Marcus Garvey at the 1924 national convention in Harlem.
At sixty, Davis has left the stage to fully devote herself to Garvey’s “African Redemption” movement, raising funds for a steamship line meant to resettle Black Americans in Liberia. But Poston, who died after a failed UNIA delegation to Liberia, returns to challenge Davis’ plans to conceal the truth and keep fundraising.
As Davis defends her choices, she relives pivotal moments from her career, from racist heckling and abusive relationships to bold theatrical risks. Their final confrontation reveals deep personal trauma and unresolved tensions around Garvey’s legacy. The play honors Davis’s radical artistic integrity, explores the enduring complexities of Garvey’s vision, and pays tribute to the activist-artist’s enduring pursuit of a dream.
